Meet Fr. Roberto Mena, ST, ParishWorld.net's Spanish Theology Editor
JUNE 26, 2008 (Los Angeles, CA) - Fr. Roberto Mena, S.T., the associate pastor at Our Lady of Victory parish in Compton, CA, is from Guatemala City, Guatemala, and has been ordained seven years. During his formation one of his apostolates was working at the local Catholic radio station.
While in Compton he continued that apostolate, first working at El Sembrador the Spanish language broadcast and web radio station of Archdiocese of Los Angeles. There he hosts two weekly call-in radio shows, one which relates movies to Bible stories and teachings; the other teaches the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
He also works for the Archdiocesan Media Relations Office, granting interviews about pressing Church issues. He frequently appears on Univision and Telemundo, the main Spanish language television networks in the US, providing commentary on Church activities such as Papal Masses and the Beatification of Mother Teresa.
Fr. Roberto commented, “I learned I need to be a missionary to be a good communicator; What I live in the mission, I connect with the world.” He sees his mission in media as, “preserving the faith because a lot of times the people do not know the details of their faith. When you explain the faith in a simple way people become more active in the Church.”
Fr. Roberto is looking forward to his new assignment as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Bainbridge GA., where using the internet, he will be able to continue radio broadcasts and contacts with the Spanish media.
